Throughout WWII, Belomorsk was temporarily the capital of the Karelian-Finnish ASSR. The buildings of the Headquarters of the Karelian Frontline, and the Headquarters of Guerrilla Movement have been preserved as well as evacuation hospitals. The underground command centre for the Headquarters of the Karelian Frontline is located near Sukhoe village (10 km from Belomorsk). There is a park in the town named after A. N. Pashkov, a Hero of the Soviet Union who lived in the Belomorsk region. A memorial has been set up in memory of those fallen in WWII.
