To Ortje Stepanov
Are the coasts not dripping with honey?
Why else would my quill long for them?
It dreams of lowered sky
And sadness in fields over there.
Oh, meadows so vast:
Of Karelian language:
The cat peacefully eats from his dish.
The fire crackles loud
In the fiery mouth of furnace:
Flour and batter:
A thin skanets everyone envies.
Kalitki prepared in the morning:
Beloved stalklet of Haikola,
Little flame of a bell-flower:
He didn’t forget, didn’t forget
The time he was with you.
See you on the island of Haikola!
