As many of the churches in Russia, it was destroyed in Soviet times. It was consecrated in 1889, but by 20 s it was already out of use. Only after hundred years the people used the national money to build a new church on the holy ground, right by the road and next to the lake, welcoming in travellers and local church members.
The church has excellent acoustics. Should you be in Kalevala on Sunday, you would hear the wonderful singing of the local choir, but for the celebratory Divine Liturgy on July 12 more visitors usually gather, including the pilgrims from Finland. There is a small church choir; and the Sunday school is held on Saturdays.
