Take a bus from Petrozavodsk to Sheltozero, located in the south-west of Karelia. This is the old Vitegorsky road stretching alongside south-western coast of Lake Onega (84 km — 1.5 hours along any route).

From Moscow to Sheltozero
1) Distance from Moscow Ring Road — 1200 km. For the first 600 km drive along St. Petersburg route, but turning off to the right towards Petrozavodsk at the sign about 100 km from St. Petersburg. For the next 100 km you will take a road through Kirishi, Volkhov and Staraya Ladoga, and then take Murmansk route — 330 km to Petrozavodsk. At Petrozavodsk roundabout follow the directions to Voznesenye, Sheltozero and then travel for 80 km along P-19 road.
2) Distance from Moscow Ring Road — 950 km. Travel to Yaroslavl and follow the directions to Vologda throughout the city. Do not enter Vologda, at the roundabout turn left, following the directions to Kirillov. Vologda is approximately halfway to it. Then you will travel for 320 km to Vitergra along a good road. Go through Viterga towards St. Petersburg, then take the federal route towards Murmansk. When you reach Petrozavodsk roundabout, follow the directions to Voznesenye, Sheltozero — 80 km along road P-19.
From St. Peterburg to Sheltozero
1) From St. Petersburg travel along the federal route towards Murmansk until you reach Petrozavodsk; then travel along road P-19 until you reach Sheltozero (80 km).
2) You can also go from St. Petersburg through Voznesenye along less busy route; however, you will have to travel for 45 km along the dirt road of medium quality. To follow this route, before reaching Lodeynoe Pole turn left off the Murmansk route towards Podporozhye. A paved road leads to the ferry. In Voznesenye take a ferry across the Svirj River. The ferry departs approximately once every hour from 7.00 to 21.00.
